1. Sculpt OS version 23.10
--------------------------
End of October, we proudly released version 23.10 of our Genode-based
general-purpose operating system. We simultaneously published the PC
version alongside the mobile variant for the PinePhone.
https://genode.org/news/sculpt-os-release-23.10
The official announcement linked above is complemented by an informal
article that presents the most user-visible changes:
"What's new in Sculpt OS 23.10"
https://genodians.org/nfeske/2023-11-03-sculpt-os
The highlight of the PC version is the new ability to monitor and
steer CPU power/temperature/frequency parameters of the platform at
great detail. You can find the use of this feature described in the
following article:
"x86 CPU frequency and power steering with Sculpt 23.10"
https://genodians.org/alex-ab/2023-10-23-msr
In tandem with the release, a series of further articles related to
the new version sprung up. For example, Benjamin Lamowski explains
how Rust programs can now be compiled for Sculpt OS:
"A first complex Rust package"
https://genodians.org/atopia/2023-10-26-a-first-complex-rust-package
As in invitation to turn Sculpt OS truly into your own OS, I wrote
up a practical modding guide whereas Johannes Schlatow shared his
customizations and workflows from the perspective a software package
provider.
"Crafting a modded Sculpt OS image in a few moderate steps"
https://genodians.org/nfeske/2023-11-10-modding-sculpt
"Sculpt Customisation"
https://genodians.org/jschlatow/2023-11-03-sculpt-customisation
Finally, let me mention that a new version of the Goa tool has been
released in sync with Sculpt OS so that Goa-based software can be
easily targeted at the new Sculpt version. Hence, in the depots of
various Genode developers, you can find plenty of software packages
readily available for the new version.
2. Revival of our Hack'n'Hike community gathering
-------------------------------------------------
For many years, our annual Hack'n'Hike - combining our fondness for
hiking at daylight through beautiful scenery with hacking at night
with candlelight - was our most anticipated community event. We
sorely missed it in the years of the pandemic. All the more happy
we are to announce that the date and location of a new Hack'n'Hike
for the next year is set! This time, we will gather at the beginning
of May in the Zschopau river valley.
May 3 to 6 (Friday to Monday), 2024
Villa Wilisch, An der Schlösselmühle 1, 09439 Amtsberg
https://www.villa-wilisch.de
Genode Labs will sponsor the event, which includes
- Lodging with bath, bedding, and towels
- Exclusive seminar room with LAN, WLAN, internet
- Catering for breakfast and dinner. (please tell us in advance if
you have special requirements) Note that lunch is not included.
For joining the event, please register no later than by the end of
February by writing to: hacknhike@genode-labs.com
We want to give participants from diverse backgrounds a chance to
attend. Due to the limited capacity of the venue, please limit the
number of attendees of your organization to a maximum of two.
For any further questions, don't hesitate to reach out by writing
to: hacknhike@genode-labs.com
3. Getting together at FOSDEM 2024
----------------------------------
Besides the above mentioned Hack'n'Hike, the FOSDEM conference in
Brussels will be one of the highlights of next year.
https://fosdem.org/2024/
February 3 and 4, 2024 in Brussels
For the community of Free-Software and Open-Source developers, FOSDEM
is arguably the most singular event. In our case, we are especially
attached to the microkernel developer room, which will take place
on Saturday this time. You can find the call for participation here:
https://fosdem.microkernel.info/
Like last time when we presented the mobile version of Sculpt OS in
the FOSS-on-mobile developer room, we will again try to contribute
to this amazing developer room as well. Looking forward to see you
there!
4. Genode OS Framework 23.11 released
-------------------------------------
At the dusk of November, we have just released version 23.11 of the
Genode OS Framework, which includes all the recent improvements
present in Sculpt OS 23.10 as well as plenty of new feats and
features.
Just to name the highlights, the new version moves the IOMMU driver
from the kernel to the user land, introduces the monitoring and
steering of CPU power/temperature/frequency, comes with a new
API for low-complexity GUI applications, and streamlines the
framework's virtualization interface. It also improves developer
ergonomics and showcases the port of the Linphone VoIP stack.
You can find these and more topics covered in great detail in the
official release documentation for the new version:
