============================================== Genode Labs Newsletter - February / March 2024 ============================================== Content 1. Our FOSDEM presentations are online 2. Genode OS Framework 24.02 released 3. Sculpt OS 24.04 is just around the corner 1. Our FOSDEM presentations are online -------------------------------------- In the previous newsletter, we announced Genode's participation in this year's FOSDEM in the form of two talks. By now, the recordings of both presentations have become available: "Genode on the PinePhone on track to real-world usability" https://fosdem.org/2024/schedule/event/fosdem-2024-3017-genode-on-the-pinephone-on-track-to-real-world-usability/ "Streamlining application development for Genode with Goa" https://fosdem.org/2024/schedule/event/fosdem-2024-3089-streamlining-application-development-for-genode-with-goa/ After returning from the conference, we took the chance to re-record an extended version the PinePhone talk featuring several more demos and background stories. You can find the video accompanied with a brief FOSDEM report here: https://genodians.org/nfeske/2024-02-15-fosdem-aftermath 2. Genode OS Framework 24.02 released ------------------------------------- With much excitement, we published Genode's first version of the year by the end of February. https://genode.org/news/genode-os-framework-release-24.02 As we dedicate this year to Sculpt OS usability, it is no surprise that the release improves on several user-facing aspects. One highlight is our redesigned audio infrastructure for versatile multi-channel routing and mixing at low latency and flexible sample rates. Another long anticipated feature is suspend/resume on PCs. The release solves a crucial piece of this puzzle by making Genode's storage and GPU drivers suspend/resume aware. For developers, usability is almost synonymous to tooling quality. With the new version, the Goa SDK receives the ability to use Sculpt OS running on a local or remote machine as a remote test target, which gives development-test cycles a welcome boost in terms of speed and joy. The summary above barely scratches the surface. For the complete story, please let me refer you to the release documentation: https://genode.org/documentation/release-notes/24.02 3. Sculpt OS 24.04 is just around the corner -------------------------------------------- Genode Labs can at times feel like a beehive. With the upcoming Sculpt OS release in sight, now is such a time. The new audio infrastructure we introduced in Genode 24.02 has been adapted for most audio clients ahead of our planning. So we will be able to expose and stress-test our new audio facilities on all of our machines soon! Far-reaching and profound advances of Genode's USB device management have been merged mainline, which will make the least-privilege assignment of USB devices to VMs and USB clients a breeze. Lately, we have leveled up the management of storage devices as a preparatory step for suspend/resume. The new ability to use the GNU debugger for inspecting Sculpt subsystems has just been merged as well. Busy bees we are. In anticipation, we are looking forward to end of April when this new version will be released.
